Milwaukee 0602-22 12-Volt Ni-Cad 3/8-Inch Cordless Driver/Drill Kit : Milwaukee 0602-22 Review

Compact, Tough and Powerful!!!5
If you need a good all around cordless, this drill is highly recommended. Milwaukee has done a great job incorporating "Heavy Duty" toughness without the weight of an 18 volt bruiser! This drill is not only light but compact, nearly the size of my older Panasonic. The plastic housing is the best I have seen among cordless drills. Looks like it's built to last! The rubberized trigger and soft grip handle just adds to the balanced comfort. This drill also included a cool Clip-Lok system eliminating the need for a holster or one of those awkward lug hooks.

The power is more than adequate for most jobs. I was able to drill quite a few holes with my hole-saw during door installations. The drill does pack a pretty hefty kick with all the torque generated at 1400rpm. Luckily, there is a two speed feature to tame this beast! For me, a good 12 volt drill is perfect for most woodworking projects, the weight and extra bulk of anything greater is just not worth the fatique. Maybe I just don't have the ego for a hefty 18 or 24 volter! To me, the whole point of using cordless tools is to get away from the excess weight!

The only complaint I have on this drill is the trigger. Although, I love the rubberized feel, my finger got pinched quite a few times when I pulled the trigger. The fleshy part of my trigger finger got caught between the tacky rubber switch and the housing...Ouch! Then again, it may just be me and not the tool. All in all, this is another excellent product from Milwaukee! And a big mahalo to Larry at the Amazon/Tool-Crib for assisting with my purchase. No where on the islands was this beauty available!

I don't know what there smoking !!!5
I have been using two of these drills for a few years now and they are awesome . I don't know what these people are looking for out of a 12 volt cordless drill but they must be smoking something if they're not happy with this . This tool takes a beating and comes back for more . Great power for a 12 volter . Very comfortable for all day use .

Doesn't get any better than this5
I took a stab at panasonic cordless tools 3 years ago based soley on the nimh battery capassity. What i ended up with was a superior drill that lasts 6+ hours.I am a contractor and i have used this drill every day for the past three years ive owned it.Ive had to send my drill out for a tune up recently,(it diddnt break whatsoever)its nice having a drill that can be used on a daily basis for three years without a single issue. The battery charger it comes with is a fast 45 min charger, so your never without a uncharged battery(if you play your cards right). Now the downside, this drill is heavy but thats what you give up with an 18v drill that has to be understood i wouldnt buy this drill for its weight but if you want the best ,a heavy tool is what you end up with. If you want something lite get an inpact wrench.
In conclusion this drill i believe is the best out there for lite masonairy apps like tapcons, the torque is way overboard (it can tackle things most other drills cant like drilling through steel)so you dont have to think twice about corded tools across the jobsite, or out in the box truck.Even though this tool is heavy i still gave it five stars because to me its worth its weight in gold. Dan G, W.R.C CT.

Excellent Product5
I have used many cordless drills and this one is by far the best. It has excellent power and battery life. I would highly recommend this tool to anyone.

Smooth machine5
I am completely satisfied with the Panasonic hammer drill. This is my second purchase of a Panasonic drill. I had bought a cordless drill about 6 years ago, also from Amazon. It is working strong.

Panasonic EY6432GQKW 15.6-Volt NiMH 1/2-Inch Cordless Drill/Driver Kit Review

Terrific combination of power, weight, size, & ergnomics...5
Panasonic EY6432GQKW 15.6-Volt NiMH 1/2-Inch Cordless Drill/Driver Kit
Since this drill has been extensively reviewed, this write-up will compare it to another highly rated (by Amazon reviewers) tool, the Bosch 33618 18-Volt Brute Tough Drill/Driver. I own and use both.
Power. With 500 inch pounds of torque, the Brute out-powers the Panasonic's 390 inch pounds, and most other cordless drills, on sheer torque. (However, putting things in perspective, my DeWalt DW235G 1/2" Heavy Duty 7.8 Amp corded drill overwhelms the Brute in this category; so do not buy a cordless drill thinking you will have the "most powerful" tool.)
Chuck. Slight edge to the Brute. Both drills have terrific one-handed keyless chucks that will tightly hold any bit, from tiny 1/16 inch round bits to 1/2 inch bits. Both are very quick to change out bits, even with one hand. However, my Panasonic chuck wobbles a tad and sometimes the shaft turns 1/2 revolution or so when trying to tighten the chuck, before it locks in place. The Brute chuck does not wobble and the shaft always locks immediately. (One Panasonic reviewer said "It is difficult to center small bits in the chuck"; probably a result of the chuck being open too far -- simply close-up the chuck more before inserting the bit.) Both have a terrific electric brake. Release the trigger and the chuck stops instantly.
Weight. The Panasonic is the clear winner in this department as I can use it all day without arm fatigue. The same cannot be said for the much heavier Brute; it is especially uncomfortable to use overhead for any length of time, and I'm 6/4 260 lbs.
Size. The Panasonic is 1/3 smaller, and can be used in tight spots where the Brute will not even fit.
Run-time. The Panasonic seems to run longer. (Its NiMH batteries have a higher amp-hour rating.) Also, the Panasonic, when not in use, seems to maintain its charge longer than the Bosch. I keep the spare Panasonic battery in the charger so it will be ready when needed. On a construction job when the Panasonic is used frequently, a battery discharges about once a day. On rare days, I change out batteries twice. Neither the Panasonic or Bosch battery gets hot sitting in the charger for hours (or even days).
Clutch. Tie -- both offer a wide range of choices, from a few pounds of torque to run-up a small screw, to maximum to drill a large hole. Both have a "lock" position which bypasses the clutch to provide maximum tool torque. I've snapped many a screw and phillips bit with each of them.
Charge time. Tie -- both are fast. About 30-45 minutes. However, if the spare battery (for either brand) is kept fully charged, this isn't usually important, because run time is far longer than charge time.
Ergonomics. Tie. Both fit my [large] hand, have no sharp spots, nothing pinches my fingers and the grip is comfortable. The reverse switch is perfectly logical on both, in my opinion.
Speed control. Tie -- both are excellent, going smoothly from a dead stop to full speed. (One reviewer that had a problem with his Panasonic speed control must have had a defective switch.) Release the trigger and both tools stop instantly.
Gearbox. Do not know what the Panasonic gears are made out of, but the Brute gears are steel, and should last the life of the tool. (One Brute reviewer said his gears "stripped out, I. e. the motor was turning but not the chuck; my guess is he had the speed selector set between high and low.) Steel gears are important to me ever since my Porter Cable 14.4 v drill stripped its nylon gears.
Noise. The Panasonic whines a little, as though its gears are really tight. So what; it is not annoying.
Auxiliary handle. The Brute comes with an excellent side handle that can be tightened into place at any point in the 360 degrees. The Panasonic does not come with such a handle, probably because it is not sufficiently powerful to need one. Have not used the Bosch side handle often, but it is useful when working with large bits that can bind, and stop instantly. I.e., that handle could save your wrist from a nasty sprain if the drill continued turning before you could release the trigger.
Tool case. Tie. Both cases are molded plastic, have metal latches, and fit the tool just fine.
Question: Which is best?
Answer: The Panasonic does everything the Brute does, except for those few times when I need greater power. Without the Brute on a job site, I use a corded drill more often. But using the heavier Brute for hours on end tires my arms, and sometimes that Brute is just too big to fit where I'm drilling. Invariably, when I take one cordless to a job, it is the Panasonic.
February 2007 update:
After 26 months of frequent use (e.g., construction jobs), the Panasonic batteries have not noticeably deteriorated in power or run-time; and the drill works just as well as when new. After 39 months of less use, the Bosch batteries are fading and need frequent recharging. To my dismay, two new Bosch batteries cost about the same as a new Panasonic drill. So, I bought another [new] Panasonic drill, which of course includes two of those terrific NiMH batteries.

Awesome5
Shear power. At 390in./lbs. of torque I have been having trouble trying not to shear the heads off of galvanized screws (pre-drilled w/countersink). I've tried both speeds, and all of the clutch settings. This has forced me to drive screws 7/8 of the way home and finish off the deal by hand.

I just finished using this Panasonic to drill 3/4" x 2 3/8" deep holes into a hardwood workbench for bench dogs. The Panasonic maintains constant speed under strain, and while getting hot, it did not overheat. The only reason I would need to stop was to let the fostner bit cool down.

The 3.5 amp NiMH batteries are A+++++. The kit comes with two, so you always have one in the ready. One charge lasts a full day under heavy use. The drill is well balanced and has good ergonomics. The electronic brake stops on a dime. This can't be good for the brushes, but no problems so far. I like the weight of this drill, it is substantial but not too heavy.

The best feature of all - SMALL DRILL BITS WILL NOT SPIN IN THE CHUCK. WOW

I will probably dedicate the 15.6 volt to drilling and buy the Panasonic 12 volt cordless for driving screws. The 15.6 easily overpowers cheaply made screws. Highly recommended!!

Best overall drill5
I'd been waiting for years for the perfect overall drill to come into my workshop. I have a brother that sells power tools for a living and he told me about this Panasonic drill that he liked better than all the rest of the pack. The couple of selling points he had was the high torque at ANY SPEED... pull the trigger a bit to turn a screw in slowly even when the going gets tough... and the almost never-ending power supply of 3.5 Amp hours... that's enough power to run a halogen light for 75 minutes! I recently put in an entire subfloor on one charge, the battery just doesn't quit. Note of caution: the chuck has an anti-loosen mechanism that while loosening or tightening makes a pretty loud whine... or ratchteting click when hand turning.. but it pays off.. my bits never loosen while on my milwaukee it happens any time i bump the chuck while loosening screws.

I lucked out in the timing of my purchase.. they just came out with the 3.5AH battery.. it uses squared off battery cells to get more juice in almost the same space as the 3.0AH batteries that have cylindrical battery cells.

I've used the bosch 24V which has 25% more torque.. a monster.. but this drill will put 4" screws into hardwood w/o thinking about it so it has gobbs of torque yet is still a very nice small size.. it fits no problem between two studs to drill holes for wiring and i've used it to bore 2 1/2" holes in cabinets.

I bought the lantern and a spare battery and it's extremely convenient to have a constant portable light source that will last 5-6 hours straight with no dimming whatsoever (light just shuts off when battery is low).

Summary: impossible to beat this drill for overall use... get the new 12V impact if you want light and high power mostly for screw driving... get the 15.6 if you want the best general purpose drill made.

Oh what a difference5
Have owned a 14.4 Ryobi Cordless drill for year, but became increasingly disatisified with short battery life, and also the inability of the chuck to hold the bits securely.
Although I am just a "home-owner", I do appreciate good tools and the Makita Mforce is top notch. Good Balance, the chucks grabs the bits correctly. The 2 speed drive along with a easy feel to the speed lever makes a controbable tool with just the right feel and control. The extra dollars is well worth it, as now I have a tool that will last for many many years, and most importantly is a pleasure to use. You know.. priceless.
follow up: july 15, 2009.. Sadly accidentally dumped this great tool into salt water, and it actually ran for awhile, but the salt took its toll. Will have to get another

Awsome5
I purchased this drill about three months ago and I have been using it almost daily on various home improvement projects. I have owned two lesser brand drills in the past and this time I went for the best. The perfomance of this drill is so much better than those cheaper brands it's amazing. The battery life is outstanding along with power and torque of the drill. I have also used serveral Dewalt cordless drills and find the performance of the Makita superior. This drill is a winner.

Non-professional perspective5
I'm a homeowner and occasional DIYer. I do appreciate a good tool and splurged on a previous version of this drill 3 years ago when I needed a cordless. It has been a workhorse... it handles all of those "around the house" tasks without breaking a sweat. It's lightweight enough to be very handy to just grab and use, and laughs at my typical jobs- hanging stuff on walls, putting Ikea furniture together.
The controls are really well designed- the direction switch is in easy finger reach, but never gets in the way. The gear shift is on top and thus easy to see, reducing the number of "oops" moments. The speed control is very precise and easy to fine-tune, and the drill stops instantly when you let go of the trigger. The body is narrow enough to fit in tight spots, and the thing is light enough to hold and control at arm's length without being a weightlifter.
But I came to have a new appreciation of it last weekend when I was replacing the decking on our back deck with Trex composite lumber... I used this drill to pre-drill and drive all of the screws for a 300 sq. ft deck. The power was plenty sufficient, and the excellent batteries were able to keep up with me- by the time I ran one out, the other was charged and ready to go- I was doing the cutting and carrying the lumber too, so it got regular breaks. The battery life was still excellent after three years of neglect- being left uncharged for long periods of disuse, or alternately staying in the charger for weeks at a time. I had only rarely done a "full cycle", and yet I felt like all the power was still here.
Anyway, I've been really, really pleased- unless you're a pro that *really* needs a lot of power and run-time, don't be seduced by higher-voltage drills- this is likely to match the endurance and needs of even a relatively serious DIYer, and you'll have something a lot lighter and nimbler than one of those monsters.

Skil 2887-05 18-Volt 2-Speed 3/8-Inch Drill/Driver Kit Review

I have been using this for about six months and have almost retired my 110v drill. With two batteries, I never get a break between jobs and this drill has power to spare. I have been putting up a wooden fence on top of a concrete block wall and this thing outperforms my expensive 110v B&D. After only three 3/8" x 2 1/4" deep holes in the concrete, the AC drill was getting hot. The Skil worked right through without a complaint. The Bosch masonry bit isn't bad either. Additionally, I was drilling 1/2" holes in redwood plate and 1/4" holes in eighth inch metal strap as part of the masonry drilling. When drilling the metal and the bit first pokes through, the drill almost torques out of your hand. I did three battery changes for a day's work. The batteries charge quickly but, as a hint, fully drain the battery before recharging and let it cool off before putting in the charger. This applies to all DC tool batteries. The on-board bit carrier isn't much of a feature but its there if you need it. The drill is lighter than most DC tools costing much more, is well balanced and, at the highest torque setting will drive 3 1/2" screws into studs without maxing the clutch.

Amazing Value5
I've been using supercheap 18-Volt drills (Power-Craft, Aerotec, etc.) that you can get on other sites for $30. After going through 3 of them, I finally decided to go with a name-brand. The difference in quality is unbelievable, and the price difference isn't that significant when you factor in the extra battery. I'm sure that Skil doen't even compare in quality to Dewalt, Milwalkie, and the other big "professional" names, but those names are twice as much, and for my purposes, this thing is perfect.

Great performance, amazing value5
I bought the Skill 2887-03 as part of a combo set including the drill/driver, circular saw, reciprocating saw and jigsaw. Needless to say, I've been extremely pleased.
I put hardwood flooring on three floors (2000+ square feet) and used the set extensively. From cutting plywood for the subfloor and underlayment with the circular saw to making curved cuts in the hardwood with the jigsaw. The drill/driver was used to screw in over a thousand screws to secure the underlayment, drill numerous holes, stir paint, mix mortar for the tile, etc. And with two batteries, you'll be able to have one charging always ready to go. The only corded tools I used for this project were my compound miter and jamb saw. Everything else was done with the cordless Skil combo set.
I was so pleased with the tools, I bought two more sets, one for myself and one for my dad for father's day.
Highly recommended.

DEWALT DC759KA Heavy-Duty 18-Volt Ni-Cad 1/2-Inch Cordless Drill/Driver Kit Reviews

Great drill/driver5
I have had this drill for about six months and am very happy with it. I am a homeowner so I can't speak as to how this drill would function during all day use. For projects around my house it has plenty of power although, like every other cordless tool I have used, it needs a little more time drilling/driving through hard wood. If I want to drill through something thick and tough, I used a beefier corded drill. So far, I have not noticed any of the battery life problems discussed by other reviewers.

I picked up a set of the Dewalt hex shank bits and have not noticed any slippage. The only time I have had a complaint with the drill was while using a hole saw to install locksets in two doors. Of the four holes, the bit slipped out of the chuck two times. Once I reinserted the hole saw it went right on through the door. I don't know if I didn't get the chuck tight enough or if the chuck just prefers the hex shank bits.

All in all a great drill. I can't imagine ever installing curtain rods, assembling bookcases, etc. with a corded drill and/or screwdriver again!

Chronic run out problems2
I recently purchased this drill despite the warnings I have read here related to chuck run out. After charging the battery and firing the drill up for the first time, I was disappointed to find that the chuck was dooing the hula! There are 2 key characteristics for a power drill, the first is that it is powered, the second is that it rotates concentrically around its central axis. Unfortunately this drill did not meet these basic requirements. I sent it back in exchange for the XRP model. The XRP had worse run out than the first!! I used an XRP model for years in the maintenance shop and it was a tough and bullet proof accurate drill. The new drills are not anything close to the ones manufactured 5 years ago. I am not sure why Dewalt has sided in favor of poor quality. If they still cared about quality, drills like these would not have made it out of the factory. The run out that I experienced would have been caught on a very basic visual test.
Don't waste your time with a Dewalt drill unless you don't care about run out.
I wrote Dewalt's customer service department complaining about the problem. Apparently Dewalt has sent its customer service off shore as well as its manufacturing. The response letter for letter is below.
Hello, and thanks for using DEWALT's on-line support.
Sorry to hear of your problems with chuck run-out. Our specs call for no more then 15,000 one inch from end of chuck. If third unit has same problem contact me via this email. Have you tried to drill holes of drive screws with these units? If so what happen?
Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to serve you. If your question remains unresolved or if you require additional information please update this incident.
Sincerely,
John Smith
What a Joke!! Again, don't waste your time or money on a Dewlat Drill.

Did something happen to DeWalt? (Ok for drywall, not good for accuracy.)3
I've never reviewed a product here before but I felt I really had to this time.
Long story made short- I am a cabinet maker and when I received my 18v DeWalt from Amazon (after waiting patiently for almost three weeks) it arrived with a wobble in the chuck. I don't mean I took a dial indicator to it to make sure it was perfect, I mean it was easily visible to the naked eye. If I had to drill a 1/16th hole in something this would not do an accurate job. So, I emailed Amazon and they kindly sent me a replacement drill which also arrived with a very wobbly chuck. Two in a row, I couldn't believe it. I called the DeWalt 800 number and they said to take the drill to my local service center. When I did they took one look at it and said "oh yeah, that's not right, we'll put a new spindle in for you,". Two more weeks (with no drill) later I sent my intern to pick up the drill. It came back with a new chuck and a slightly different wobble. I now regret buying something online that I would want to hold in my hand and examine first. Sure, this drill would work fine for shooting drywall screws in but I need something better. For $200 I want a drill that's nearly perfect. 200 bucks is alot of money.
So, what happened to DeWalt? Have they cut costs to meet higher demand? I bought a 14.4v cordless DeWalt right out of college and it worked great for years until it was stolen. In a pinch I bought a 14.4v Ryobi which worked well for a year but eventually the batteries stopped holding a good charge. When that happened I thought well, it's time to buy another DeWalt, but now I wish I hadn't.

Great versatility and power4
Black and Decker has a great product with this little gem. It is much more versatile than a drill and is light weight as well. It has far more torque than the wimpy cordless screwdrivers, even more than Dewalt's 7.2V screwdriver, with the same great quick release adapter built in. I find this much easier to use than a standard cordless drill with a standard chuck (even the keyless ones) for drilling pilot holes and then driving screws. And as for driving, how about 3.5 in deck screws into treated lumber and even 4x4's. This baby has the power.
Another great feature is the five positions you can put the head in, to give you access in close quarters with enough power to do something with it. Great for hard to reach places.
It comes with a molded plastic case and an assortment of drive bits, drill bits, and nut drivers to get you started. If you want to use standard drill bits, buy yourself a quick release drill chuck. The only draw back is the long charge time (no quick charger) and only one battery. Otherwise I would have given it a 5.

Sticks Its Neck Out4
This is a handy tool, solidly built and you'll find a surprising number times you'll be glad for the swivel neck for getting into awkward places. The neck locks firmly into place, with no play. The quick change bit system makes changing bits fast and painless, and the three finger trigger is nice and comfortable to use with great control over drill speed.

Two things niggle me about it though. As someone else mentioned, it seems to have low torque even at the highest setting, so you should only get this for fairly light household and assembly chores. And the battery charge cap does not give any visual clue as to when the battery is fully charged, so you have a hard time knowing when it's full again.

Other than that, it's a great drill!

Good Idea5
I describe this as a cross between a drill and a power screwdriver. Is has the power (12v) of a good cordless drill, but has a smaller head that articulates. It can get into spaces a normal drill won't go. It can't quite manage as tight a space as a power screwdriver, but they don't have 12volt umph. It's well made and has a clutch feature. It uses quick realease 1/4" hex bits. It can't accept standard drillbits, unless there is some sort of adapter out there. Several drill bits, screwdriver bits, and nutdriver bits are included and store in the hardshell carrycase. An easy to use around the house tool. Bosch makes a similar tool that costs double what this does.
